About the Presenters:
A native of Germany, Dr. Broady is an associate professor of education at Georgetown College. She is the program director of the ESL endorsement program. She has been instrumental in ESL teacher and world language teacher training in Central Kentucky since 1999. Dr. Broady’s interests include advocacy, technology, and professional learning communities in the areas of ESL and World Languages. Dr. Broady is a committed life-long learner and enthusiastic technology user rooted in constructivism. She believes that teaching is the greatest vocation on earth. As an educator she sees her role as that of coach empowering school personnel to meet all academic and social needs of immigrant and all student populations as well as their families and communities. To that end, advocacy for those without voice is one of her prime concerns along with preparing all students for a global 21st century.

Dr. Broady’s professional leadership includes regional, state, national, and global positions. Examples include past president of and board member on the KYTESOL, steering board member of the TESOL Elementary Education IS Steering Committee, TESOL/NCATE USA ESL program reviewer, Chair-Elect of the TESOL Elementary Education IS, and multiple other positions. Dr. Broady believes that educators need to be professional leaders in order to present the latest in the discipline and shape what this status is.

Dr. Broady’s list of publications and presentations is extensive and includes regional, national, and international talks, teacher professional developments, and workshops. Among many other honors, she was chosen globally as an affiliate’s best presentation at TESOL. Professional honors Dr. Broady received over the past 20 years range from workplace service rewards at several institutions, professional recognitions, to multiple awards from KYTESOL and TESOL, such as the TESOL leadership award. Dr. Broady is proud of her several teaching awards by student nomination received at different institutions.

About Nicholas Broady:
Born and raised in the Philippines, Nick Broady is a Technology Job Specialist and hold the title of Director of Content Appraisal for the EXtension at the University of Kentucky office. His interests include technology and communities of practice in the areas of Agriculture and Extension Service Disciplines. As a technology trainer he sees his role as that of coach empowering others to share their vast professional expertise and resources with as many end users as possible. Nicholas Broady frequently presents at conferences and professional gatherings on regional and national level.

About the Presentation:
Learning and information management have undergone a huge transformation in the past few decades. Not long ago, a person with a professional degree was regarded as the owner of great knowledge and wisdom. Today, however, a professional person is only as well-trained as their continued upkeep of information.

Therefore, professionals of the 21st Century have to be life-long learners. Much of such development and learning is not acquired in formal learning settings.

In this presentation, the authors will present the idea that knowledge acquisition need to happen in a bottom-up and not top-down fashion. The authors believe that professionals need to drive their need of knowledge by getting together with others in the same discipline to discuss the status quo and needed change. Such professional dialogue, in the opinion of the authors, holds great promise for professional development.

The authors view the concept of communities of practice facilitated by moodle as one promising way for professionals to maintain their highest professional status over time despite rapid changes. They base their theoretical framework on the work of Lave and Wenger.

• Learn how to use moodle to establish and run Cops
• Learn about the authors’ assertions about the outcomes of CoPs
• Learn about the authors’ ideas on how CoPs can be used in a variety of settings, disciplines, languages, and nations

Welcome to the annual connecting online live online conference (CO11). You are cordially invited to participate at the live online conference on the weekend of Feb 4-6 2011.

The conference will be of interest to educators, administrators, students, and community members who value the importance of integrating technology into the curriculum to improve instruction and learning. Online learning involves various skills on the part of the instructor and learner. These include social and communication skills, social networking, independent learning strategies, critical and higher order thinking skills, creativity, and effective online and face-to-face facilitation. In addition, there are may challenges that the educators, administrators, students, and community members face.

The CO11 will be conducted on IT4ALL Moodle with the presentations on WiZiQ through the Moodle.

The themes for the presentations are:

  1. Connecting Online to Improve Instruction and Learning: Online Learning and Instructional Experience

  2. Experiences with technology in face-to-face and online classes. What worked and what didn't work for you?

  3. How do you use technology to promote and sustain your online workshops, consultation, and communities of practice and learning?

  4. Research conducted on e-learning, blended online learning, and blended learning.

  5. Reviewing or promoting books on integrating technology into the classroom, e-learning, blended learning, and blended online learning.

  6. Challenges administrators, instructors, students, and community members face in connecting online.
