What time is it? Time zones, spheres of influence and neo-colonialism in a global online world. by Nigel Mitchell
About the Presenter:
Nigel Mitchell has over 20 years experience in education and church ministry, including teaching in face to face and distance education at school and university level. He teaches online English literacy classes to students around the world, and is currently working with Education Services Australia as a Collaborative Tools Support Officer on the OzProjects and Global Education websites.
About the Presentation:
What do we mean by "Global" in an online world?
Is the world getting too big for us to cope?
Whose time zone do we use? Are we open 24 hours per day? Governments and NGOs have loosely defined spheres of influence in which they focus their activities (USA - the Americas, Europe-Africa, and Australia-the Asia/Pacific region) but how relevant are these for educators with a global perspective. In this paper we will consider the emerging difficulties and opportunities involved with planning global online educational conferences and classes in today's world. We will look at some simple things that planners can do to ensure that everyone is included and made to feel welcome.
